GoogleからInternet ExplorerユーザーのためのGoogle Chrome Frameが公開されました。これは、IEユーザーがGoogleの機能を利用できるようにするもので、Windows Vista / XP SP2以上のOS＋IE6/IE7/IE8で利用できます。

ユーザーがこれを利用すると、Internet Exploerではサポートされていないcanvasタグのようなhtml5の機能やChromeのJavascriptのパフォーマンスをIEを使ったまま利用することができます。以下、公式ページより引用します。

Google Chrome Frame is an early-stage open source plug-in that seamlessly brings Google Chrome’s open web technologies and speedy JavaScript engine to Internet Explorer. With Google Chrome Frame, you can:

  • Start using open web technologies – like the HTML5 canvas tag – right away, even technologies that aren’t yet supported in Internet Explorer 6, 7, or 8.
  • Take advantage of JavaScript performance improvements to make your apps faster and more responsive.

ただし、Google Chrome Frameを使ったユーザーがこれらの技術を利用できるようにするには、ウェブページの側に以下のタグが追加されている必要があるようです。

このタグを追加しても、Google Chrome Frameをインストールしていないユーザーに対して影響はありません。

Googleは最近Google Chromeの最新版でVideo要素を正式にサポートするなど、ありとあらゆる手を使ってhtml5を普及させようとしているようです。Google Chrome Frameだけでなく今後もどんなことをしてくるのか非常に楽しみですね。
